Presentation Title:

Honoring America’s Heroes: How VA is Transforming the Veteran Patient Experience through Research Driven Design

Presenters:

Peggy Reed, AIA, LEED® AP      [Principal / Architect, NBBJ]

Ryan Hullinger, AIA      [Principal / Architect, NBBJ]

Program Description:

Our talk will focus on the research-driven design process for the VA Replacement Medical Centers in New Orleans and Omaha. The presentation will address the research techniques and key insights that have shaped the projects and are helping to reshape VA’s universal standards for patient care.

Both Replacement Medical Centers seek to honor America’s heroes -Veterans who have already served, and those yet to be born.

A decision was made at the onset of both projects to embed human-centered-design expertise on the team in order to influence the ultimate design of the medical centers. The hypothesis was clear: by integrating new perspectives from social science and other design domains, we could provide insight into Veteran and staff behaviors, and deliver a high-performance facility that honors the Veterans it serves.
