AIA Akron 2012/2013 Design Awards Program
Tuesday, April 9, 2013
University of Akron Martin Center
RSVP by noon April 3, 2013
This event is one of AIA Akron’s most prestigious events as we honor our local architectural firms for their excellence in building design. We want to recognize those who have made significant contributions to our profession and our community.
Please plan on joining us to honor our award winners for the 2012/2013 AIA Akron Chapter Design Awards. Our region has been blessed the past two years as our chapter produced 49 total entries, including 18 of those coming from KSU students and intern architects. A talented local jury was assembled to compare and contrast the entries, finally coming to a consensus on the winners which will be announced in a celebratory event at the Martin Center on The University of Akron campus on April 9, 2013. Please make your reservations now to join us for an evening of food, drink, and award winning design.
Did you know that the Martin Center was The University Club of Akron from 1909 to 1987?
In 1909 a group of young college graduates, most away from home, formed the University Club of Akron. The club, initially open only to men with at least two years of college, had a social, cultural, athletic and educational purpose. Nine years later, having grown considerably, the members built and moved into the building now known as The Martin Center. The lower two floors were used for social activities and the upper two floors for sleeping accommodations. At the rear of the building were clay tennis courts.
For the next fifty years, the club served as a gathering place for members and their dates or spouses. Intertwined with the growth of Akron, the roster of members read like a Who’s Who of the international rubber community. From club shows and dances to tennis tournaments and educational programs, the club thrived. Due to the buildings convenient location, many University of Akron activities also took place here.
In the 1970s, it became increasingly difficult for the membership to maintain the building. As a result, the facility was donated to The University of Akron in 978 with the agreement that the University Club organization be preserved, if possible. However, by 1987 it was apparent that the days of the old University Club were over and the membership disbanded.
Today, after considerable remodeling, the building once more reflects the grandeur of its early days. A center for University activities as well as numerous community, social, and education events, the spirit and ideals of the club and its founders endure.
