2012/2013 Design Awards Submittal

AIA Akron 2012/2013 Design  Awards Submittal

 2012-2013 Design Awards Graphic

Dear AIA Members:

Please consider entering the 2012/2013 AIA Akron Chapter Design Awards program. This program
provides recognition for exceptional work in the local area and beyond, and affords us the opportunity
to showcase our efforts to the public, our clients, and our peers.

As always, we hope to increase the number of entries, especially encouraging those who have not
traditionally participated in the program to submit their best work. Towards this end, we are accepting
projects in the categories of commercial, residential, unbuilt projects, miscellaneous, and student work.
We believe that this will encourage entries in all of the various market sectors, as well as “other” work
created by member firms or individuals.

Qualifying members/firms include any individual AIA Akron members completing work under their
own name (person holding the contract) or firms with at least one principal as an AIA Akron member
as of December 1, 2012. Entrants are asked to clarify if they are the Design Architects or Architects-of-
Record and Awards may be given jointly to the Design Architects and Architects-of-Record if they are
different. Students shall be Associate Members of AIA Akron or student members of the AIAS.
Qualifying projects for the built category are those completed after January 2010. Past winning
projects (in any category) are not eligible.

The first step in the submittal process is to send a completed entry form (attached) and entry fee for
each project to the AIA Akron offices at the address below. Upon our receipt of this completed entry
form and payment, you will be emailed a PowerPoint Template. This email will include instructions for
describing each entry, and instructions for graphic and photographic portions of the submittal. Once
again, we are requiring that all graphic information be provided in electronic format, so that digital
images can be used to more fully describe your project.

A complete schedule is detailed below:

PowerPoint Templates available January 14, 2013
Entry fee of $75 per project is to be paid and entry form received before template is provided; make
checks payable to AIA Akron and send both to Design Awards, 2841 Riviera Drive, Suite 120,
Fairlawn OH 44333.

Submittals due, emailed by close of business on February 22, 2013. Submit entries to email address:

Judging, week of March 4, 2013.

Notification of winners, week of March 11, 2013

Awards Dinner – April 9, 2013

We look forward to receiving your submittal and recognizing the quality work produced by the firms
and individuals in our chapter. Please contact Carolyne Tinsley with any questions or comments on the
2012/2013 Design Awards Program at the AIA Akron Office.

that are your own or your team’s work
(not under the direction of a firm)

In addition to receiving this prestigious award, the winning
entry(ies) will each also receive a $100 gift card.

2012 Cleveland Design Competition

The 2012 Cleveland Design Competition: Transforming the Bridge is now Open for Registration!

The Cleveland Design Competition invites professionals, students, firms and designers to re-imagine the abandoned lower streetcar level of Cleveland’s Detroit-Superior Bridge as a dynamic public space, performance venue and pedestrian experience. At the beginning of 2012, an initiative called “The Bridge Project” was launched to raise public awareness about the potential of The Bridge and to engage the community for input on opening the lower level for public use. The Cleveland Design Competition has partnered with The Bridge Project to engage designers to propose compelling visions for the permanent use of The Bridge, public access into and passage through the lower level of The Bridge, and connectivity to surrounding neighborhoods.

The Bridge offers tremendous potential for use as a dynamic public space, performance venue, and sheltered bicycle/pedestrian connection over the Cuyahoga River. Designs will provoke public conversation about creative place making in Cleveland and provide innovative ideas for a world-class public space.
CLICK HERE to check out more information about this year’s competition challenge on the new competition webpage.

At the conclusion of the 2012 Cleveland Design Competition, a jury of nationally renowned experts will select submissions to receive the following prizes:

First Place: $5,000.00 USD

Second Place: $2,000.00 USD

Third Place: $1,000.00 USD
