A.R.E. 5.0 Study Sessions, hosted by AIA Akron

AIA Akron is hosting ARE 5.0 study sessions, and we’re inviting you to the first planning meeting: a sort of  “demystification” of what the exams are and how to tackle them effectively. We will have a panel made up of recently registered architects and current test-takers to talk us through what to expect.
All study sessions will be free to members of AIA Akron, and will cost $35 for non-members, but this first meeting will be free to all! Take this chance to tell us how you would want to study and get answers to your testing questions.
Join us on April 7th, 2018 at 11:00am.

2017 Golf Outing Recap

The AIA Akron, Akron-Canton CSI and Clevand CSI

12th Annual Golf Outing

Despite a delayed start from an early morning thunderstorm and threats of more rain later in the afternoon, our 12th Annual golf outing was played on July 7th at Raintree Country Club in Uniontown, Ohio.  Sixty-four golfers filling out 16 foursomes plus numerous volunteers enjoyed the golf, food and fun.
The winners this year came from the architectural firm Sol Harris Day and their foursome of Burt Marzley, Nate Kobb, Andrew Lallathin and Jeff Hostetler.  They broke the 60 barrier with a 59!  The second and third place teams both shot 62 with a tie breaker (score on highest handicap hole) giving the edge to the W.L. Tucker Supply team of Rick Oberhauser, Brian Belden, Dana Mitchell and Jim Green.  The third place group was the Chas E Phipps team of Brad Hicks, Ted Scheetz, Bruce Wilson and Dave Hall.
A special thanks to our event sponsor, Oberfields.  Bill Nettling went over and above helping to make this outing a success.  Also, thanks to our food sponsors, Specrete Grouting Additives for the breakfast and EPIC Engineering group for the dinner.  And, last but not least, thanks to Karen Bialosky and SE Blueprint for their printing donation.

Continuing Education:
Working Towards Lien Rights
for Ohio Architects
Course Description:

Are you having difficulty collecting your fees?  We’d like to know.

Architects could consider their lien rights when looking for options to collect earned fees.  In all but one state, architects can secure payment on their design contracts by attaching them to the property itself.  They are utilizing the legal concept that those who add value to the site deserve to be paid.  In Ohio, however, the state legislature has determined that architects and their consultants do not add value to the site. The AIA Ohio Lien Rights Task Force is currently considering options to possibly re-gain these rights for Ohio architects.

Attend and let us know if lien rights are important to you.

Learning Objectives:
  1. To understand the concept of lien rights – to secure payment of your contract with the assets of the land – as a powerful business tool.
  2. To understand the general procedure for implementing lien rights: yours and your contractors; an overview to help you talk to your attorney.
  3. To understand why Architects in Ohio do not currently have lien rights, and why this is an unusual problem that needs to be addressed.
  4. To understand what AIA Ohio has done and is now reviewing regarding the recovery of these lien rights for Architects.
Course number: OHAK080317 registration in process for 1 LU.
Registration Due Date Is July 28, 2017
August 3rd Lien Rights Membership Meeting
