Election Tools from AIA

The 2016 election is almost here – are you prepared to make your voice heard? Whether you’re a Democrat, Republican, or Independent, it’s critical that you exercise your right to vote.

In OH the deadline to register to vote is coming up quickly – October 11. If you aren’t sure if you are registered, the American Institute of Architects is here to help. Go to the AIA Advocacy Action Center, select “Voter Registration” from the menu on the right, and you will be taken to your state’s website to get the process started!

Now that you are registered to vote, make sure you are prepared when you head to the polls. During the primary season, we debuted the 2016 Presidential Candidate Profiles that showed where the candidates stood on issues that impact architects the most. Now that the election is just around the corner, we’ve updated the profiles with new insights and information on the major third party candidates. We hope you find this information useful as you make this important decision.

Don’t want to wait until November 8th to cast your ballot? You’re in luck – early voting begins in OH on October 12.

How you vote is a personal decision – the AIA does not endorse candidates for President. But it’s important to make your voice heard in this election! We hope that the AIA Presidential Candidate Profiles will help you as you make your decision.

AIA Akron 2016 Survey

surveyAIA Akron 2016 Survey

The Akron Chapter of the American Institute of Architects is embarking on a membership and architect survey to better gauge areas in which the chapter can better serve the architectural community of the greater Akron area.

The AIA Akron chapter has an exciting year ahead. The board of directors is constantly looking for ways to better serve our members, stakeholders, and others in allied disciplines. We recognize that you are very busy, but we ask that you would please take a few moments to help us understand how we can best serve your interests and represent the industry in our region. We ask that you follow the link below to a survey that will help us make informed decisions as a group.

The Chapter will compile the information received from the survey to help develop a Strategic Plan for the chapter.  The results of the survey  will be presented at our Annual meeting on Tuesday, October 18.  We will also be taking comments from those present at the meeting which will be then incorporated into our final Strategic Plan. Your participation will help us keep the Akron Chapter at the forefront of the design community. Thank you for partaking in the survey and hope to see you in October.

Because member benefits and desires are important to us, collecting this data is vital to delivering the best services possible for 2016 and the coming years.  Once you complete this survey, we encourage you to pass it along to those within your office or fellow colleagues (member or non-member, registered architect or not – anyone that may find value from AIA Akron).  The information collected will help AIA Akron focus future efforts, programming, and services on the wants and needs of those in the greater Akron architectural community. Thank you in advance for taking the time to assist with this effort.

We want to gather the results by October 14, 2016. Take the survey now…

In the architecture world, few designers can claim to have a more clearly-defined style than Daniel Libeskind. Much of Libeskind’s work is instantly recognizable for its angular forms, intersecting planes, and frequent use of diagonally-sliced windows, a style that he has used to great effect in museums and memorials – but which seems equally adaptable to conference centers, skyscrapers and shopping malls.
Not long after completing high school, in 1965, Libeskind became a naturalized American citizen. That same year, he chose to study architecture, enrolling at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. Libeskind told Cathleen McGuigan of Newsweek that his pursuit of architecture seemed like a natural progression, as it is a field that “combines so many of my interests. Mathematics, painting, arts. It’s about people, space, music.” When the World Trade Center was under construction, Libeskind used to wander down to the site, as he related to Devin Leonard of Fortune magazine: “We used to come down here at lunch when the trade center was being built. It was the most incredible building in New York.”
Studio Libeskind is involved in designing and realizing a diverse array of urban, cultural and commercial projects around the globe.  Our Studio is a collaboration of architects and designers that believe architecture is a practice of optimism. We approach our projects with the attitude that to make great places, you must believe in the future, but also remember the past.
Daniel and his partner Nina Libeskind established Studio Daniel Libeskind  in Berlin, Germany, in 1989 after winning the competition to build the Jewish Museum Berlin. In February 2003, Studio Daniel Libeskind moved its headquarters from Berlin to New York City when Daniel Libeskind was selected as the master planner for the World Trade Center redevelopment.

AIA Ohio Convention 2016

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
We have two keynote speakers scheduled during the AIA Ohio Convention in Akron.  On Thursday, Oct. 6, convention attendees will hear from Jane Weinzapfel, FAIA, from the AIA National Gold Medal Firm (2007) of Leers Weinzapfel Associates in Boston.  Jane is a design leader in campus academic facilities and campus design in general, and has a special expertise in award-winning infrastructure and transportation design. Dedicated to the craft and technology of design, she has led many of the firm’s investigations of new materials and systems.  Jane has been a Visiting faculty member at MIT’s School of Architecture and Planning and at the University of Arizona College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, where she was on the Dean’s Advisory Committee. In 2002 she was a Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome. She lectures and participates on design juries widely throughout the United States, Italy, and the Middle East. She has been a Design Critic and Lecturer at several universities in the U.S. and abroad.
On Friday, Oct. 7David Riz, FAIA, from Kieran Timberlake in Philadelphia will join us offering a keynote presentation as well as his perspective as the jury chair for the AIA Ohio Design Awards.  David practiced architecture in Japan and taught design in Taiwan prior to joining Kieran Timberlake in 1999. He has led projects that employ experimental construction methodologies with radically altered supply chains and lofty sustainable goals.  Focusing on promoting open, collaborative exchanges that foster design, David has significant experience with the large-scale integration of architecture, landscape, and the public realm. He was responsible for several campus projects such as the Northwest Campus Housing Infill at University of California Los Angeles; a master plan for a new Liberal Arts Campus for Yale University and the National University of Singapore; and the West Campus Residential Initiative at Cornell University.
