AIA Akron is a local component of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). We represent over 170 members in 11 counties of the greater Akron area. Our mission is to organize and unite in fellowship the members of the Architecture profession. We promote the aesthetic, scientific and art of planning by advancing the standards of architectural education, training, and practice, to coordinate the building industry and the profession of architecture to ensure the advancement of the living standards or people through their improved environment.

The annual College of Architecture and Environmental Design Career Fair is coming soon to the KSU Student Center. Each firm will be provided an 8′ table for displays and material.
Join them for a casual lunch from noon to 1:00PM with current faculty and staff. From 1:00PM to 4:00PM you will have the opportunity to meet students from architecture and interior design and see their portfolios. Even if you are not planning on any full-time hires immediately, it is a great time to consider a summer intern as they add an amazing amount of energy to a firm.

January 11, 2012, “Architectural & Security, Gate & Fencing Systems,” presented by Greg Marchione, Ametco Manufacturing.
The course provides an overview of gate and fencing systems, which are both functional and decorative, and are designed to meet modern security and design requirements while harmonizing with the surrounding environment. At the end of this program, participants will be able to identify a wide range of exterior and interior applications of today’s fence and gate systems based on their functional, decorative, and security requirements. We will discuss today’s fence and gate systems in terms of their composition, materials, coatings, and finishes, classify gate track configurations, hardware, hinges, and locking mechanisms. We will identify the performance elements of various types of fencing systems, and the attributes of a variety of infill panel designs. Finally, we will assess factors such as security, efficiency, aesthetics, and the surrounding environment, and specify the most appropriate gate and/or fencing system for a specific application. 1CEH.
January 25, 2012, Vertical Transportation “Choosing the Right Elevator for Your Building,” presented by Dan Baylor, ThyssenKrupp Elevator.
This course is a high-level overview of basic elevator design and function. After completion of this course, participants will: Be able to distinguish between the different classifications of elevators. Have a basic understanding of the hydraulic elevators. Have a basic understanding of Machine Room-Less elevators. Be able to compare different types of elevator installations, operating costs, traffic analysis, noise, energy savings, ride quality and cab weight allowances.
