Leveraging Information with VDC TechnologiesAIA CES Logo

Virtual Design and Construction Staff Phil Nagle and Neale Whitehead of Welty Building Company will discuss various innovative technologies and processes the can be used throughout the design and construction of a project. These tools are focused on enhancing collaboration between teams, reducing material and financial waste, and creating a safe and efficient work environment for everyone involved on the project. The tools that will be covered in the presentation include 3D laser scanners, virtual reality, fully-integrated BIM to prefabrication, and field observation techniques for continuous improvement. Technical examples will be shown from Akron Children’s Hospital projects to illustrate the benefit of the processes, discuss team member feedback, and explain lessons learned through the developmental journey.

After the course presentation, the session will allow users to interact and engage with these technologies to see their benefit first-hand. Equipment will be setup at different stations within the room, and the group will cycle through the stations to observe, experience, openly discuss the various tools in operation.

Learning Objectives:
  • Identify how 3D laser scanners and drones are used to capture existing conditions, generate models that can merged with other design data, and review content in various platforms to aid in streamlined programming and design.
  • Investigate the tools and workflow associated with virtual reality, and identify value-added functions in development of design with active involvement of building occupants to ensure their spaces are designed to provide the best care.
  • Describe how a fully integrated model can be leveraged for precise layout and prefabrication of building components to reduce material waste, improve quality of construction, and reduce worker strain.
  • Identify various construction observation techniques and analysis procedures to capture current state of activities on site for collaborative team review, and explore improvements that focus on worker safety, efficiency, and quality of work in adherence to design documents.

Presentation, 1 LU/HSW

Light and Color with LEDs

Presented by Myriad Energy Solutions

Our eyes can play tricks on us when it comes to color and how the eyes adapt.  Lighting designs are affected, positively and negatively, by this.  Understanding basic vision science, and how the eye perceives colors of objects and the environment, are important elements in design considerations. Comprehending color metrics that are used with conventional and LED sources will allow for a more thoughtful technical and artistic approach to the design.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the basics of vision science, and how we see color in our environment.
  2. Describe current color metrics and terms such as: CRI and evolving color scales, Correlated Color Temperature, and trichromatic theory.
  3. Describe how lighting affects how we perceive the color of objects and the environment, and the tradeoffs between color rendering and efficacy.
  4. Understand these effects when designing lighting solutions, using conventional and/or LED sources.
