Peter Bohlin – AIA Gold Medal Recipient

A Joint Meeting with Akron-Canton CSI, AIA Cleveland & AIA Eastern Ohio

Tuesday, September 6 , 2011  – Toguchi Lecture – KSU

“The Nature of Circumstance”

Peter Bohlin’s presentation will relate to his interest in the nature of circumstances. Overall, Mr. Bohlin will outline his belief and interest in shaping our architecture to the particular circumstance of each project and the connection between this and many other aspects of architecture. His objectives: 1) The attendee will understand the nature of man, our senses, how we move, how we touch, our intellect and our emotions, our dreams, our past, our institutions. 2) Understand the nature of place, whether natural or man-made-the tilt and warp of the land, the sun and wind, rain or snow, its attitude, its spirit, the marks of man on a place, a dense urban world or a landscape that reveals its geological past and vestiges of man’s hand. 3) Understand the nature of making, of materials-stone, wood, concrete, steel, aluminum, glass, plastic, fabric. 4) Understand how these and many other circumstances, through intellect and intuition, shape a powerful and sustainable architecture.

Peter Bohlin is a seasoned architect who started his firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson 42 years ago that has since grown to a practice of 150 people in six cities. The man who disdains having an office has designed them for others, along with stores, government buildings, visitors’ centers, and a host of other spaces public and private. In his 55-year career, his designs have garnered close to 500 awards, including his most recent: in early December 2010, Bohlin, 72, was named the 2010 Gold Medalist by the American Institute of Architects. The Gold Medal is the highest individual award given by the AIA and the profession’s highest individual honor, given in recognition of an accumulation of work that makes a significant and lasting impact on architecture.
